Lapis lazuli

Ultramarine blue flecked with gold — those golden specks are pyrite, and the white veils you sometimes find are calcite. The finest stones come from Afghanistan, where they have been mined for millennia; the denser the blue and the rarer the calcite, the more prized the piece. This is the blue painters ground before synthetic pigments.
