Obsidian

A volcanic glass, black and mirror-like, whose fracture is as sharp as glass — which is what made it into blades before metals. It is not a crystal: the lava cooled too fast to organise itself, hence the absence of grain and that mirror polish. The snowflake variety owes its grey rosettes to crystals formed in the mass as it cooled.
